SAGE Diary, 11-11-09 Pt. 1

Description

Just the 1st Part of a short work about SAGE-sama, the unstable retired Air Force OS-tan. SAGE stands for Semi-Automated Ground Environment and it ran on one of the largest computers of all time. Responsible for tracking airborne threats from 1958-1983 SAGE was a good system that helped pioneer modems, interactive user interface, and was the basis for modern air traffic control systems. Unfortunately it was incapable of tracking missiles and was occasionally thrown off by large flocks of birds.

In her heyday SAGE-sama was a brash military officer, proud of her job and her achievements. However she began going down hill in the early 70s when she realized how limited her systems were by that time. When the last SAGE control center was shut down in 1983 (and parts shipped to museums and prop companies, see Lost and many 80s movies) SAGE completely lost it. Now she wanders between her old homes trying to find any of her former colleagues. She has a paranoid obsession with birds, who seem to flock around her unless she engages them in violence. Being cut off from her sensory organs, i.e. the radar net that fed SAGE information, SAGE-sama is now almost totally blind despite her efforts to correct it with glasses.

Okay, time to begin [finally] -- hold on to your seats, cause I've been keeping these notes piling up for a while. ^^

======

Well this is the arc that started this all. Had I been more on top of
this, I would've just done mini replies to each of this... but alas, I
sucketh. :)

When reading a little of SAGE back in OSC, I did recall seeing images
of huge radar dishes sitting on top of block structures -- knowing
this helped with the imagery, which is both vivid and also
appropriately cryptic given the interaction of an "OS-tan" with a real
world location. There is a sharp bitterness to her tone, having
contributed so much but being all but forgotten and cast away, and
worse being considered a "monster". But this seems more like an
inconvenience and one not worth worrying about beyond just a few words
about kicking gravel; there's a greater sense of longing for a better
time, which of course is evident in all vintage-tans. Do to her age,
she'd be at the forefront of any deterioration in character that might
be lost in younger generations.
